For many Kenyans sports betting has become the new goldmine for instant riches, but betting is a game of chance and if you are lucky the millionaire’s club is open for you.
For others when luck runs out you end up losing more than you bargained for.
That is how one university student came to learn a lesson bitter than what he was taught at university.
For Moses Omwoyo regret is all he has now after dropping out of Maseno University due to lack of fees.
Omwoyo withdrew Ksh 40,000 from his bank account meant to be his university tuition fees.
He used the money to bet in the match between Barcelona and Levante on Sunday February 7 in the Spanish league.
“I knew Barcelona was going to beat Levante by more than two goals especially after scoring seven in their previous game against a team that was better,”Omwoyo said.
But to his horror Barcelona did not win by more than two goals and he ended up losing all the money which was a Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) money and worse he will have to pay for the loan in future.
“My HELB loan cash disappeared in only ninety minutes, it was a big disappointment in my life, that was the only cash I had after making a withdrawal from my bank account, I hate gambling because it just ruined me,”he said.
Omwoyo had to drop out of school as he could not raise fees and now is at home contemplating his future.
There have been reports of university students gambling with their loans from the government and later regret their decisions. According to gambling website ildado.com, if you need the money, do not gamble.
“Only gamble half of what you are willing to risk. This way, if you do not win, you will give yourself a second chance, another day,” reads an article on the website.
This money should not be that meant for basic expenses like food or rent. When you run out of money, never borrow from family and friends in order to continue gambling.
