Meet the young homeless boy with a big heart

By Ndungu Nyoro

Meet JOHN THUO the homeless youth who broke to tears on his first encounter with GLADYS KAMANDE.

A calm boy who would rarely engage unless he's sure of the motive. We met in the afternoon at Thika Stadium. I had requested Cllr John Kibue Kibs to make arrangements since they have been in contact. And at 3.30p.m he showed up in the company of Mwangi Kamande (Gladys' brother), Patricia and Maina. Other friends joined later.

After introduction I tried to probe him but he was too clever. He could respond always 'NILISAHAU HIYO'. I realized he wanted some sort of privacy from the many of us present and asked we sit in a car.

So who's Thuo?

He's a young man, a son of David Njoroge and (late Mary Nyambura). They were three children. His parents had not so good marriage and his violent dad could always kick his mum out when drunk.

Nikafutwa kazi".

He moved to street life. His grandmother chased him and his siblings because apparently she was taking care of 6 other children from her other daughter who was deceased too. He says the six cousins were being mistreated even by their uncles.

At Thika he got used to his life until his encounter with GLADYS.

Vile magari zilikuwa zinaenda polepole nikaenda kumwona. Vile nilimwona ilibidi nikalia. Nilimhurumia. Hata nilimchangia ile 20 bob nilikuwa nayo".

I asked him why he decided to give the only money he had in his pocket. He told me he opted to give because even him if he suffered the same, others would support him. He told me his dad is still alive but he remarried yet he doesn't know where he stays.

At the request of Gladys, Thuku has been moved from the streets of Thika and is now under the care of a children's home. He is willing to go back to school as long as it's not anywhere far from mum(Gladys).

I wish him well in life. With such a kind heart, he has a bright future ahead. He hopes Gladys will open her eyes soon to see how he looks.

He is with Gladys, are you?
