Baby Maddox was not an ordinary child; at her tender young age, she was already dealing with a rare form of cancer in her eye. The disease could have been deadly for Maddox, but she pulled through and miraculously beat it. But all of the emphasis that was put on her to pull through by the community of Syracuse was just too much for someone close to her to take.

One day, after Ryan routinely dropped off his wife at work, he didn’t drive off with Maddox. He left the car with the keys inside nearby, which Morgan later found. A strange note that was left for her by Ryan indicating that Ryan may have suicidal or homicidal desires. She immediately called the police. An Amber Alert was issued for Maddox, and Morgan was asked to go on TV to plead with Ryan to bring Maddox home.

Morgan could barely compose herself enough to ask Ryan to please call and tell her that Maddox was okay. She emphasized that he would also be welcomed home by her entire family, which may indicate that she knew he was in huge trouble for taking the child. Still, the police did not tell people why Ryan felt the need to abscond with Maddox.

Ryan never answered Morgan, but he was spotted two days later and arrested. Maddox was nowhere to be found.

Ryan led investigators to the spot where they would find his daughter’s body. He admitted that he was jealous of the attention that his 21-month-old daughter was receiving due to her sickness. She got all the sympathy from the people they encountered while she was with him, and he never got any. It drove him mad, and he kidnapped her in order to murder her.

Ryan detailed how he took the child to a rural area where he killed her with a baseball bat. He took her body and the weapon to a fire pit and burned them, but that wasn’t enough. He packed up her charred remains, drove to a creek, wrapped it in a bag that was tied to a cinder block and sunk it in the water.

With Maddox’s family’s permission, Ryan plead guilty to first degree murder, for which he will spend a minimum of 25 years behind bars. He could spend life in prison if he isn’t granted parole.

Syracuse and the rest of the world is mourning Maddox who beat a young death just to be killed in a senseless, devastating act perpetrated by the person she trusted the most. We don’t know how Morgan or her family is holding up, but this is something that they may never be able to get over.

Local police guarded Maddox’s grave as people created a memorial for her, but all we can hope for now is to prevent other acts like this by identifying and treating mental illness and preventing mentally ill people from harming themselves and others.
