Kogelo’s Elderly Women Enroll For English Classes In Order To Speak To Obama
Imagine a situation whereby you are presented with that one in a lifetime opportunity but sadly, you cannot communicate.
Several women in Siaya County do not want that to happen and have now taken English classes in anticipation of US President Barack Obama’s visit to the area.
“They were really excited earlier in the year when they heard of Obama’s visit. They had even rehearsed English songs and dances to perform during his homecoming. Despite the U.S. Embassy’s announcement, they are still hopeful he will visit Siaya,” Florence Auma, an adult education teacher told Citizen TV.
The women, aged between 21 to 73, said the classes will help them communicate with tourists who also visit President Obama’s ancestral home.
65-year-old Jane Wanjiku Ahenda, a student at the Bar Ogong’o adult education centre, told the station than the classes also help them their day-to-day businesses.
Barack Obama, among other things, will give a talk at the sixth Global Entrepreneurship Summit and hold a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta during the two-day visit.
Kogelo residents are still hoping that their ‘son’ will spend some time with them despite US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec’s announcement that he will not.
The county government reportedly drafted a KSh 52 million budget for events dueing the homecoming.
