Leave Kenya alone, Principals tell US envoy US envoy to Kenya Michael Ranneberger warned to leave Kenya alone US envoy to Kenya Michael Ranneberger warned to leave Kenya alone Kenya’s coalition principals Sunday took on US Ambassador to Kenya Michael Rannerberger during Jamhuri day celebrations for interfering in the country’s affairs. President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga told the envoy to respect Kenya and its citizens. The two were reacting to leaked diplomatic cables that have soared relations between the two countries. Ranneberger, in his cable to the State Department at the beginning of the year in January described President Kibaki and the Prime Minister as part of a political and economic elite resisting reform. The coalition partners must have been angered by the latest dossier by Wikileaks which brands Kenya’s Cabinet as the most corrupt in Africa. Newly-released cables say US diplomats believe nearly all government ministers are tainted. Mr Odinga described Rannerberger as a colonial governor and told him to keep off Kenyan affairs. “We do not want visitors who come act as if he is a governor…the last governor left in 1964. The responsibility of running Kenya is now ours. We welcome visitors , but we also want them to respect us,” said PM Odinga. On his part President Kibaki urged Kenyans not to worry about the leaked cables. ” Kenya is a sovereign state and no one should scare us with things that they write. Those trying to scare us should go elsewhere.” said the President. The President at the same time stated that a foreign power was funding the youth to cause instability and confusion in the country. Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka also hit out at the US envoy for disrespecting Kenya’s leadership. This is not the first time the two leaders are reacting to the released cables on Kenya. On Friday, President Kibaki dismissed as empty talk, the perception by United States, saying that those who seem to have much time engaging in writing falsehoods about the country will not succeed in diverting Kenyans from their core business of developing the country. The Prime Minister also dismissed as gossip reports contained the in the leaked diplomatic cables. ICC process On the ICC, President Kibaki urged Kenyans to demonstrate “political maturity” during the course of the ICC process. “As the ICC process gets underway, I urge Kenyans to demonstrate patience and political maturity. As a nation, we must also fully embrace the process of national healing and reconciliation. We are one indivisible nation. Let us not engage in utterances that compromise our national unity,”” Kibaki said. The President’s appeal to Kenyans comes barely two days before Kenyans know the masterminds of the 2007 post election violence. The PM said Kenyans should now let the ICC do its work since we are the ones who chose The Hague. ICC prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo will on Wednesday 5 o’clock in the evening announce six politicians and businessmen suspected to have masterminded the post-election violence. The announcement will be streamed live via the internet.
