The medical equipment launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta at the Machakos Level Five Hospital in May was meant for Kilifi County, Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has said.
The CS told a House team on Tuesday that the state-of-the-art equipment was diverted to Machakos after the ministry was frustrated by the Kilifi County government.
Appearing before the National Assembly's Health Committee, chaired by Kitui South MP Rachel Nyamai, Mr Macharia said Kilifi County refused to allow the ministry to take the modern health equipment to a selected hospital.
BENEFIT FIRST
"Kilifi County was supposed to benefit first. We had identified Malindi Hospital as the first hospital to be equipped but we were chased away by the governor," said Mr Macharia
The CS was responding to concerns by Malindi MP Dan Kazungu, who wanted to know if it was true that the hospital in his constituency was to get the equipment before Machakos.
"We have talked with the leadership of this county and were told that the equipment taken to Machakos was supposed to go to Malindi but that county politics frustrated the plans," said Mr Kazungu.
Governors had initially refused to take them, saying they had been sidelined in their acquisition.
