KRA Extends Deadline For Filing Tax Returns… Again

The Kenya Revenue Authority has for a second time extended the deadline for filing tax returns until Sunday, July 5, 2015.
Commissioner-General John Njiraini, who had earlier announced the June 30 deadline extension to Friday, June 3, acknowledged the problems encountered while using the KRA iTax system which has so far seen 2 million users register.
“It is true there are issues to do with speed, which are related to the stare of Internet connectivity in Kenya, and the government is already investing in broadband services across the country,” he said.
The five-day extension in an opportunity for those who failed to comply to do so in order to avoid penalties.
Under Section 52B of the income Tax Act, every individual earning a taxable income is required by law to furnish KRA with the assessment annually.
“If you do not submit the Return by this date you will be liable to a penalty at the rate of 5% of the net tax due for every period of 12 months or part thereof, minimum penalty being Ksh1, 000,” the Act reads.
In 2011, when President Uhuru Kenya was the finance minister, he sought to change the Act so as to reduce unnecessary filing.
“I propose to abolish the filing of returns by employees who have no other income and their PAYE has been paid to the Exchequer by their employers,”said Kenyatta during the 2011/12 Budget speech.
However, KRA holds that the exercise prevents loss of revenue as some employers to not submit their employees’ taxes to them.
